DIY: Tips on How to Paint a Car

A car is a means of transportation, a home, or a status symbol in the modern world. Part of car maintenance is applying a new coat of paint when you can visibly see that the paint has been chipped, scratched, or washed up. Going to an expert may prove to be super expensive for a task that you can comfortably do in your garage, given that you have ample time and patience. Here are some tips on how to paint a car.

Assemble All Your Requirements

You must assemble what you need before you start the process. Items such as sandpaper, a sander, masking tape, old newspapers, spray gun, and a buffer are all essential. You also need a reasonable amount of paint according to your car’s size. Be sure to have the right shade of color by using a color code to be as precise as possible.

Prep Your Work Space

Your work space should be a fairly open space that gives you room to move about without touching the car. You should also clean the area to prevent dust particles from settling on the paint before it dries up.

Sanding

Using sandpaper, start by sanding the body down to the metal. It serves the purpose of laying even the surface where the paint will come to contact with. The sanding technique used should be in a circular motion. Once you are done, wipe the body using thinners. Followed by drying before paint application.

Prepare Yourself

To apply the paint, you need to properly prepare yourself by wearing appropriate gear that will adequately cover you. Wear a mask, overall, and gloves. Be sure also to practice your spraying technique; you can use spare scrap metals.

Paint Your Car

Ensure the spraying gun is held at a distance from your vehicle. Spray a different panel of your car starting from the doors, the roof the bonnet and the boot. Let the sections dry as you proceed to spray another layer. It is advised to spray three to four coats of paint. The final step is to let the paint dry.

Once the paint is dry, take a thorough look at the car at different angles to ensure all parts have been touched and are evenly painted. If you are satisfied, you can now ride away into the freeway.
