Intersport Fights Hard At Mid-Ohio
As the #37 Intersport Racing Very Berry Exotics Judd Powered Creation car continues to improve, the team always looks to do well when the American Le Mans Series returns to Mid-Ohio. The track serves as “home” for the Dublin, Ohio based team. What’s more, Intersport Racing owner and 2005 American Le Mans Series LMP2 Champion, Clint Field, can certainly lay claim to having earned his “chops” here.
Mid-Ohio was also where the team had its first official practice opportunity with the new Creation CA06H-Judd LMP1 package.
“We had had the distinct displeasure of doing all of our testing in public this year,” laughed Clint. “We got the new car just days before the season opener at Sebring with no time to test. From there we went on a three-race trek of street courses all in a few weeks of each other. Every race was a different package completely. We started Sebring on smaller wheels and LMP2 tires. Kumho quickly went to work producing LMP1 tires so we could convert the Creation chassis over to the upgraded larger wheel set-up at St. Pete... so we basically threw everything we learned at Sebring out the window.”
“We always look forward to Mid-Ohio,” noted Clint. “There’s nothing better than sleeping in your own bed and commuting to the track. And, we love the track. Dad [co-driver, Jon Field) and I have a lot of great memories here. To say it feels like home is not a just a cliche`.”
With near-perfect racing weather at hand, the American Le Mans appearance at Mid-Ohio was yet another near sell-out. The cars took to the celebratory "for-the-fans" grid, [an ALMS tradition] and the race got underway with the green flag falling at 3:26PM.
Starting the #37 Very Berry Exotics Creation CA06H-Judd from the 12th position on the grid, Clint Field avoided a first lap incident between the #1 Audi and #9 Acura and ran a solid stint for the first hour. He pitted at 4:27pm for fuel and tires while turning over the driving duties to co-driver, Jon Field.
Jon would complete his stint at the 2h 8m running time stopping for fuel and four new tires and turning the car over to Richard Berry. As Berry attempted to restart the car the starter failed. Berry would never turn a lap and the team's day would be cut short. Thus ending a six-race streak of podium finishes.
"This was really a tough break," remarked the ever upbeat Interpsort team-owner, Clint Field. "We were running well and holding our own out there. Obviously, well on our way to another podium finish. This was just one of those things."
"You always want to do well at home in front of family and friends," continued Clint, "but some things just fall out of your control. I had a good start and dad [Jon Field] drove a great stint. He's a lot of fun to watch on this track. We're disappointed that Richard wasn't able to continue, but we'll move on to Road America next month and see what we can do there."
